Stone Fold Hybrid:Home

THE DESIGN
Nestled against a 12-metre siltstone rock face, Stone Fold Hybrid:Home is a site-specific response to challenging terrain and BAL 29 bushfire constraints. The L-shaped design maximises northern solar access, protects from southerly winds and frames panoramic views across the surrounding ranges. A cantilevered balcony floats above the tree canopy, blending architectural drama with functional outdoor living.
Constructed using OUTLIER.’s Hybrid:Home methodology, the home brings Passive Solar Design and Building Science into the architecture. Airtight construction, continuous insulation and careful detailing of thermal junctions form the basis of its building envelope.
The all-electric home includes a 6.6kW photovoltaic system, with provision for battery storage and electric-vehicle charging. Heat-pump hot water, air-source heating and cooling, induction cooking and low-energy fixtures support everyday use. A 10,000-litre rainwater tank and native landscaping extend the design thinking beyond the walls.
Inside, heat recovery ventilation is designed to provide filtered fresh air. Sensors monitor temperature, humidity and air quality, allowing the home’s performance to be examined over time rather than inferred from its appearance.
The twelve-month performance report compares monitored indoor conditions with energy modelling and examines the wall and roof assemblies through the seasons.
“I can’t imagine not living here now, it’s just so easy and enjoyable every day.”
